Sidecars

1000cc sidecars are highly developed racing machines. They carry a rider and passenger, use a highly tuned and modified 1000cc motorcycle engine in a lightweight and multi-adjustable frame and have got to be the fastest off-road racing motorcycles. Using an alcohol fuel, they develop around 150BHP and are highly impressive and spectacular to watch.

Most common engines in use at this time are based on Yamaha's FZR EX-UP motor or the later R1. there is an extensive list of tuning modifications to make the engines perform as they do, from special gearboxes with compressed air changers, heavy duty clutches, special camshafts and so on - the list is almost endless - and very expensive!!

500cc sidecars are the version of sidecars that are predominantly raced throughout Europe.

The 500cc sidecars are based - albeit very vaguely - on the 500cc solo machine. They use the same type of engine and use a similar type of transmission to the solos. They even go the same way round as solos. Despite the smaller engines, the racing is very close, fast and exciting, helped by the extremely lightweight engines and frames.

The images below are of a 500cc Sidecar and a 1000cc Sidercar. Note how the sidecar is located on the right of the 500cc machine but on the left of the 1000cc machine
