Solo Machines

There are 3 recognised Adult Solo classes all based on engine capacity :: 250cc, 350cc & 500cc

The 250cc class is the class where 2-stroke engines are used. The engines are sourced from Motocross machines and fitted into the standard track racing frame.

350cc 4-stroke engines are generally sleeved down 500cc engines but there are a few specialist 350cc engines produced. There are a few 2-stroke engines used but not many. The engines have a seperate gearbox - usually a 2-speed-semi automatic and the engine burns alcohol fuel.

500cc engines are all 4-stroke and are the same engines as used by speedway riders from all over the world. there are slight tuning alterations to tune the power and torque to a suitable combination for the longer tracks associated with track racing. Again, these engines have a separate gearbox and burn alcohol fuel.

The latest frames have a mono-shock style rear suspension, the engine is in a "lay-down" configuration to push forward and lower the centre of gravity and have leading link front suspension to help smooth out the ride and improve the handling characteristics.

A 2-speed semi-automatic gearbox is a highly specialised unit that allows a single change from a lower ratio into direct drive top gear without the need to close the throttle or use the clutch and the change is controlled by the rider using a handlebar mounted lever.

To adjust the gearing of the machine to suit the track, riders use sprockets of different sizes both on the rear wheel and on the primary drive from the engine to the gearbox.

All races consist of 4 laps around a grass oval track. Starts are controlled by a manually controlled rising tape (like speedway) and are usually positioned off the racing area at the beginning of a straight. Maximum number of riders in a race is governed by track width and size but cannot exceed 12 solos or 6 sidecars.
