What is track racing?
Motorcycle track racing racing is exactly what it sounds like. Races for motorcycles on a flat grass surface using specalised machines. The Course is oval in shape, track size varies between 400 metres for small meetings to 700+ metres for major events.
Solo & Sidecars have evolved into highly specialised and technical machines. Solos have a similar appearance to speedway machines but are slightly longer, have rear suspension and have a 2-speed semi-automatic gearbox. 500cc machines use the same engines as speedway, 350cc machines are a scaled down version of a 500cc unit but 250cc machines use 2-stroke engines sourced from the world of motocross.
Sidecars have 2 seperate classes, the first with a capacity limit of 1000cc, most use Yamaha engines, either from FZR range or the R1. They are converted to run on alcohol fuel and produce a vast amount of power and are highly impressive to watch.
The second class use the same type of 500cc engines used by the solo But in a very lightweight frame and are raced throughout Europe. Apart from carrying 2 persons, being fitted with 3 wheels and using the same type of fuel, there is no other similarity between the two sidecar classes.
Races consist of 4 laps on an oval circuit, solos & 500cc sidecars travel anti-clockwise & 1000cc sidecars clockwise.
With a full entry, race meetings can consist of over 50 seperate races, taking a full afternoon to complete the programme.
